The right size, explained

Make album art a square of 3000 × 3000 pixels: it works on every platform. Spotify takes any square from 640 to 10,000 pixels on each side; Apple Music recommends 3000 × 3000 or larger, with 1400 × 1400 as the minimum. Both take JPG or PNG, and Spotify also TIFF.

Covers are seen as small squares in playlists, so keep one strong subject and big, simple type.

Vinyl and CD

A 12-inch record sleeve is 12.375 inches square, about 3713 pixels at 300 dpi, so a 3000 pixel cover needs the image upscaler first. A CD booklet front is 4.75 inches, about 1425 pixels: the 3000 pixel file is plenty.

What size should album art be for Spotify?

Does my cover need to be square?
