How to use Grok Imagine
No account with xAI, no install, no queue to sit in.
Write what you want to see
Describe the subject, what it does, where it is and how the camera moves. Grok Imagine responds well to short, concrete prompts — it is not a model you need to over-engineer.
Pick a length and a shape
Choose 4, 6, 8 or 10 seconds and one of seven aspect ratios. Resolution is 480p or 720p; the cost per second is shown before you generate.
Generate, look, adjust
Results come back fast, which is the point of this model: you can rewrite a line and try again a few times for what a slower model costs in one go.
What is Grok Imagine?
The short version, before anything else.
What it is
Grok Imagine is the video generation model built by xAI, the company behind Grok. You give it a written prompt — or a still image — and it produces a short video clip, typically between four and ten seconds. It is designed for speed: where other models make you wait in a queue, Grok Imagine tends to come back within seconds.
That speed changes how you work with it. With a slow, expensive model you write one careful prompt and hope. With this one you write a rough prompt, look at what comes back, fix the one thing that was wrong and run it again — often three or four times for what a single premium generation would cost. It is the model to reach for while you are still working out the shot.

Specs
Clips are 4, 6, 8 or 10 seconds. Resolution is 480p or 720p — this is not the model for a 4K master, and if the clip has to hold up on a large screen you want something else. Aspect ratios are generous though: seven of them, from 3:2 and 16:9 down to 9:16 and 2:3, so a vertical post and a widescreen cut are both native rather than cropped.
It takes either a text prompt or an image. Given an image it animates that frame, which is the cheapest way to see whether an idea has legs before committing a bigger budget to it. What it is not is a finishing model: use it to find the shot, then re-run the one you like somewhere that outputs higher.

Prompts that work with Grok Imagine
Short and concrete beats long and ornate.
Getting it right
Keep it to one action. Four to ten seconds fits a single thing happening — someone turning, a car passing, a wave breaking. Ask for three events in sequence and you get a blur of all three rather than any of them.
Name the camera. "Static wide shot", "slow push in", "tracking alongside" — these do more for the result than another sentence of adjectives. And because this model is fast, treat the first generation as a question rather than an answer: look at what came back, change one thing, run it again.

Who Grok Imagine suits
It is a drafting tool more than a finishing one.
People still figuring out the shot
Generate five versions of an idea for the price of one premium clip, pick the direction that works, and only then spend properly on it.
Social posts with a short shelf life
For a clip that lives in a feed for a day, 720p in seven aspect ratios is plenty, and the speed matters more than the resolution.
Anyone who just wants to see what it does
If you arrived because you read about Grok Imagine and wondered what it actually produces, this is the cheapest way to find out — write a line and generate.
Teams iterating on a concept
Fast turnaround means you can show three options in a meeting instead of describing them, and change one on the spot.

Grok Imagine runs on the Pro plan — video generation is not part of the free tier. It is one of the cheaper models per second, which is exactly why it suits drafting, and the exact cost of your clip appears on the generate button before you commit.

What Grok Imagine is good at
And what to use something else for.
It comes back fast
The defining feature. Most video models make you wait; this one usually returns within seconds, which changes it from a commitment into an experiment.
Cheap enough to iterate
Low cost per second means you can afford to be wrong a few times, which is how good prompts actually get written.
Seven aspect ratios
From 3:2 and 16:9 through to 2:3 and 9:16, so the frame matches where the clip is going instead of being cropped into it afterwards.
Text or image to start
Describe a scene from scratch, or upload a still and have it animated — useful for testing whether an existing image has movement in it.
Honest about its ceiling
Output tops out at 720p. That is the right trade for drafts and feed posts, and the wrong one for anything that needs to survive a large screen.
No watermark
Nothing is burned into the frame, so a draft can become the final clip if it turns out well enough.
