The short answer

Instagram posts are 1080 pixels wide. A square post is 1080 × 1080 (1:1); a portrait post is 1080 × 1350 (4:5), or up to 1080 × 1440 (3:4); a landscape post goes down to 1080 × 566 (1.91:1).

Instagram keeps a photo at its own resolution when it is between 320 and 1080 pixels wide and between 1.91:1 and 3:4. Wider photos are reduced to 1080, narrower ones enlarged, and other shapes cropped.

Which shape to pick

Portrait, 4:5 or 3:4, fills the most of the screen as people scroll. Square is the easiest to reuse in other places. Landscape suits wide scenes, but it is the smallest in the feed.
