YouTube's help page recommends 3840×2160 pixels at 16:9, with a minimum width of 640 pixels, in JPG or PNG. The size limit depends on where you upload it: 2 MB from a phone and 50 MB from a computer. 1280×720 is still the classic size: sharp in every list and well under the 2 MB phone limit.

Most viewers see your thumbnail small, in a list on their phone, so design for that: 3 to 5 bold words, one clear focal point and strong contrast. Keep the bottom-right corner clear too: YouTube puts the video length there.
