How to design a garden with AI

How to design your garden with AI in 4 steps

From a photo of your garden to new planting in a few clicks.

  1. Upload a photo of your garden

Take it in daylight from the house or a corner, with the beds, lawn and paths in view. No photo at hand? Try one of the sample gardens.

  2. Set the sunlight

Choose full sun, part shade or shade, or leave it on "From photo". The light decides which plants go in.

  3. Pick a garden style

Ten styles: English cottage, Japanese, Mediterranean, modern, tropical, drought-tolerant, woodland shade, pollinator, vegetable garden and formal.

  4. Compare and download

Slide between your photo and the new garden, try another style on the same photo, then download the one you like.

Sun or shade

What to plant in sun and in shade

Light matters more than anything when you choose plants. In full sun, about six hours or more of direct sun a day, lavender, salvia, roses, ornamental grasses and most vegetables do well. In part shade, roughly three to six hours, hydrangeas, astilbe, heuchera and foxgloves are a safe bet; in deep shade, ferns, hostas and hellebores. Set the sunlight in step 2 and the AI picks plants that suit it.

Your climate counts too. If you have cold winters or hot, dry summers, say so in the wishes ("cold winters", "low water") or pick the drought-tolerant or tropical style.

Flower beds

Flower bed ideas for your own garden

A good flower bed is planted in layers: tall plants at the back or in the middle, medium ones in front of them and low edging plants along the path or lawn. Repeating two or three colors along a border looks calmer than one of everything. Cottage beds mix roses, foxgloves and catmint; modern beds use grasses and clipped shapes; pollinator beds mix coneflowers, salvia and bee balm.

Try a style on a photo of the bed you have, or of a plain lawn, and compare a few before you buy a single plant.

Vegetable garden

Vegetable garden ideas, planted on your plot

Most vegetables need a sunny spot, ideally six to eight hours of sun a day. Raised beds warm up early, drain well and keep paths clean; herbs near the kitchen door get picked more often; and climbing beans on canes give height to a small plot. Pick the vegetable garden style to see beds, herbs and beans on your own garden.

It works in small spaces too: a paved courtyard with two planters becomes a herb and salad corner.

What AI can and cannot do

What AI garden design can and cannot do

It can show new planting on a photo of your own garden in a few seconds: flower beds and borders, shrubs, small trees, lawn and pots, in the style and the light you choose. It keeps what is built: the house, fences, walls, sheds and steps stay where they are, and paths usually do. On a paved patio, some styles may replant part of the paving, so try a few.

It cannot see your soil, your microclimate or your hardiness zone, and it does not know how big each plant will grow in a few years. The result is an idea, not a planting plan: some plants may not be named exactly, and not every flower in the picture blooms at the same time. Check the final plant list with a local nursery or a garden designer.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about AI garden design

Still have a question? Visit the help center →

Can AI design my garden for free?
Yes. Upload a photo of your garden, set the sunlight and pick a style, and the AI shows the same garden with new planting, usually in under 20 seconds. It is free every day with the Auto model, without an account.
Can ChatGPT design my garden?
ChatGPT can suggest plants and describe a layout in text. CreArt shows the ideas on a photo of your own garden instead, keeping the house, fences and paths, so you can see the planting in place and compare styles with a slider.
What is the best AI program for garden design?
It depends on what you need. To see planting ideas on a photo of your own garden, use a photo-based tool like this one. For a measured plan with plant quantities and spacing, use a garden planner or work with a garden designer.
What is the best free garden designer app?
If you want to see ideas on your own garden without installing anything, CreArt works in the browser and is free with the Auto model, with no sign-up. Try a few styles and keep the one you like.
What should I plant in a shady garden?
Ferns, hostas, hellebores, astilbe and heuchera do well in shade, with hydrangeas and foxgloves in part shade. Choose "Shade" or "Part shade" in step 2, or the woodland shade style, and the AI uses shade-loving plants.
Will it change my patio, paths or fence?
Your fence, walls and steps stay where they are, along with the house and the camera angle, and paths usually do too. On a paved patio, some styles may turn part of the paving into planting or gravel; if that happens, try another style or ask to keep the paving in the wishes box.
Does it know my climate and soil?
No. It sees the photo and the sunlight you choose, not your soil, microclimate or hardiness zone. Add your climate to the wishes ("cold winters", "low water") and check the plants with a local nursery before you buy.
Can it design a vegetable garden?
Yes. Pick the vegetable garden style to see raised beds with vegetables, herbs and climbing beans on your own garden. Give it the sunniest spot: most vegetables need six hours of sun or more.
What photo works best?
A horizontal photo in daylight, taken from the house or a corner, with the beds, lawn and paths in view. Bare soil, an overgrown garden or a plain lawn all work.
