A 640-pixel photo can become a sharp 4K image because the model reconstructs plausible textures — skin, fabric, edges — rather than interpolating blur.

Classic bicubic resizing spreads the same information across more pixels, which reads as soft. An AI upscaler was trained on millions of high/low resolution pairs, so it recognizes what things should look like at higher resolution and fills that in.
