AI upscaling is the process of enlarging an image with a neural network that predicts and adds realistic detail, instead of just stretching pixels the way traditional resizing does. A 640-pixel photo can become a sharp 4K image because the model reconstructs plausible textures — skin, fabric, edges — rather than interpolating blur.
Classic bicubic resizing spreads the same information across more pixels, which reads as soft. An AI upscaler was trained on millions of high/low resolution pairs, so it recognizes what things should look like at higher resolution and fills that in.
The practical limits: it reconstructs plausible detail, not hidden truth — a tiny unreadable license plate stays unreadable; it just becomes a sharper unreadable plate. For print work, upscale first, then check faces and text at 100% zoom.
